Seven Shows About Former UK Leaders at Edinburgh Fringe 2024
Note: I will be making a list for shows about Queens Elizabeth I & II and Victoria as well.
Mary, Queen of Rock!
A fun reimagining of a classic Scottish story, Mary, Queen of Rock! looks to be a delightful rock musical this year!
From the description: "You think you know the story of Mary, Queen of Scots? Think again... The year is 1561. The Scottish Reformation has enforced an outright ban on rock'n'roll. Cue the arrival of Mary Stuart, one of the world's biggest and most iconic musical artists... who happens to be the undisputed Queen of Rock! With the Scottish nobles and her cousin in England against her – can Mary get the country rocking? Or will heads roll?"

Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho
Truly a hilarious idea for a show and one done well as it is has sold out four Fringes and had a West-End run, the show is back at the Udderbelly, a dream for a Fringe musical.
From the description: "On the eve of the vote on Section 28, Maggie gets lost in Soho and accidentally becomes a cabaret superstar. Will she change her mind about the homophobic bill before it's too late...?"
Aug 12-13, 15-20, 22-25
Underbelly, George Square - Udderbelly
21:15 - 22:25
Nerine Skinner: The Exorcism of Liz Truss
Imagine having a great impression of a political leader, thinking you would have a few years to use it all over social or, if you're lucky, late-night shows. Now, imagine that the leader lasted 44 days. What do you do now? Well, you go to Fringe! Really excited for this one! From the description: "In 2022, politically unaware Nerine Skinner went viral for her parodies of Prime Minister Liz Truss. Outlasted in Downing Street by a lettuce, Liz Truss's political relevance faded and the country moved on. But Nerine didn't. Through hilarious, original, oddball characters, award-nominated political parodies and heartfelt storytelling, this is the story of Nerine trying to let go."
Aug 1-11, 13-25
Just the Tonic at The Caves - Just Out of the Box
14:40 - 15:40
The Techtonics: 44 Days of Liz Truss (A Cappella)
I have no idea how to feel about this: an Acapella group doing a show about a political figure, especially one whose tenure is one of the biggest jokes in modern times. This is either going to be incredible or "wtf did I just watch?" No in between.
From the description: "It's been a bumpy few years in UK politics, and one story is particularly comical: Liz Truss's stint as prime minister. In 44 days, Trussonomics tanked the economy, her cabinet made more U-turns than Mr Bean on a roundabout and, after one meeting, the Queen passed away. Who could be more fitting to tell this story than an all-male a cappella group of nerds from Imperial College London?"
Aug 12-18, 20-26
Gilded Balloon Patter House - Doonstairs

Jonny & the Baptists: The Happiness Index
In 2010, basically 40 years ago and (this is real) Five PMs ago, David Cameron decided he wanted to measure GDP by happiness as well. With Cameron gone, Jonny and The Baptists are here to take over.
From the description: "Are you happy? We can help! Five Prime Ministers ago, David Cameron started a Happiness Index to measure how joyful the people of this nation are. Which is ironic, given what he then did. Anyway, we've picked up the baton and now are trying to find out what the hell we should do with it."
Aug 1-11, 14-18, 21-24
Assembly George Square Gardens - Piccolo
17:55 - 18:55
Mary: A Gig Theatre Show
Mary Queen of Scots has become a true feminist icon as many theatre groups are putting together shows to honor her legacy and reflect what it means in today's landscape. Knot Tied Theatre is doing the same with her exciting production.
From the description: "Through haunting original music and rich spoken word, an actor-musician band deliver a feminist retelling of Mary Queen of Scots' story. The folk-rock show searingly questions the treatment and portrayal of women historically and today."
Aug 12-17
theSpace @ Symposium Hall - Annexe
22:25 - 23:15
Emma Sidi Is Sue Gray
Sue Gray was the unsung hero of COVID (well, I guess she was kind of sung) who outed politicians as hypocrites, to no one's surprise. Emma Sidi is back at Fringe to give her an extra voice.
From the description: "Character comedian Emma Sidi is back at the Edinburgh Fringe. And now she’s Sue Gray. But who is Sue Gray? Well, she’s [REDACTED]."
