Brainsluts is a play about four out-of-work young people trying to make a little extra cash by participating in a drug trial.
The characters have eight hours in a room each week with no wifi, making them decide whether to connect or stay quiet, and some hi-jinx ensues.
Although there are some solid jokes, the show leans too hard into the "we don't know each other, we're going to be awkward" trope and becomes a competition on which character can say the most random, quirky, awkward thing out loud. This becomes quite cringy at times.
There is also a doctor who spends 90% of the show saying awkward one liners, and then out of nowhere has a five minute monologue about her past relationship which felt...out of place.
Additionally, the show lasted 10 minutes longer than the normal 1 hour Fringe-fare and that could be felt as the ending dragged on.
If you're a fan of awkward interactions, sitcom-style settings, you may enjoy it! I would say it was rather forgettable.
